Apologize for taking over the Free Agent Signing Thread so figured it would be better to continue the discussion here. This could benefit myself and all newer GM’s as well to get a better understanding of the Free Agency rules.
Under Signing Free Agents, ZFHL Rules state, “Any undrafted/unsigned North American-based player who will be turning 21 or older in the year of the upcoming draft or European player who will be turning 22 or older who does not belong to another ZFHL team can also be signed as a Free Agent. For the 2020/21 season, this is any player born in 2000 or earlier.”
Based on the above rule, doesn’t that mean the following applies to North American-based players:
2020 NHL Entry Draft (1999 DOB not eligible as eligibility is players born between January 1, 2000, and September 15, 2002)
2021 NHL Entry Draft (2000 DOB not eligible as eligibility is players born between January 1, 2001, and September 15, 2003)
2022 NHL Entry Draft (2001 DOB not eligible as eligibility is players born between January 1, 2002, and September 15, 2004)
2023 NHL Entry Draft (2002 DOB not eligible as eligibility is players born between January 1, 2003, and September 15, 2005)
In the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, only the following 2000 DOB’s were drafted:
Daniil Pylenkov (European player)
Dmitry Rashevsky (European player)
Andrei Buyalsky (European player)
In the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, only the following 2001 DOB was drafted:
Dennis Hildeby (European player)
For the 2023 NHL Entry Draft:
To be NHL Draft Eligible, North American based players must be 18 years old by Sept. 15 and under 20 years old by Dec. 31 in the draft year.
Using Collin Graf as the example again: He will be turning 21 on 9/21/23, the same year of the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. Because of his late 2002 birthday, he was not eligible for the 2000 NHL Entry Draft. He was first draft eligible in 2021 and again in 2022. However, because of his late 2002 birthday and being 21 before December 31st, 2023, he is not eligible for the 2023 NHL Entry Draft and is an Undrafted Free Agent. Based on the above rules as well, only European players with 2002 DOB’s can be drafted in 2023.
Collin Graf was signed a few weeks ago in one of my other fantasy leagues which mirrors the rules detailed in the ZFHL Rules Thread.
